Countertop Lead Times: Planning a Whatcom County Remodel

Where the weeks actually go between choosing a slab and cooking on it, and how to sequence a kitchen so the counter is not the thing holding it up.

Countertops are the step most likely to stall a kitchen remodel, and almost always because of sequencing rather than supply.

The part people miss

A countertop cannot be templated until the cabinets are installed and level. Not drawn — installed. The fabricator measures the actual boxes in the actual room, because a half-inch of out-of-square across a run is the difference between a tight scribe and a visible gap.

That means the countertop clock does not start when you choose the material. It starts when the cabinets are in.

A realistic sequence

  1. Choose the material early — well before cabinets. This is about availability, not lead time.
  2. Cabinets installed and levelled.
  3. Template. Usually within a few days of cabinets being ready.
  4. Fabrication. This is the actual production window: cutting, edge profiling, cutouts, polishing.
  5. Install. Typically a single day for a normal kitchen.
  6. Plumbing reconnected afterwards, which needs its own scheduling.

The gap that surprises people is between template and install, and the gap that wrecks schedules is between "cabinets delivered" and "cabinets installed and level."

Choose the material early, even if you order late

Availability, not fabrication, is what bites. Engineered quartz colours are discontinued and reformulated on the manufacturer's schedule, not yours. Natural stone is worse, in a more interesting way: a granite or marble slab is a one-off. The slab you fell in love with is a specific object, and if someone else buys it, it is gone.

If you are working with natural stone, reserve the actual slabs when you choose them. This is normal practice and worth doing.

Plan for the seam conversation

Slabs have maximum dimensions. Long runs and big islands may need a seam. Have that conversation while you can still adjust the design — moving an island by four inches to avoid a seam is free at drawing stage and impossible later.

Live without a sink for a bit

Between template and install you have no counter and no sink. Households consistently underestimate this. Plan a temporary setup — a table, a kettle, a plan for washing up — and it becomes an inconvenience instead of a crisis.

Where we can help

We hold quartz from Cambria, Caesarstone, Vicostone, Silestone and MSI, plus natural stone slabs. Two things worth doing early:

  • Come and see full slabs, especially for natural stone. A sample tells you the colour and nothing about the movement.
  • Bring your cabinet layout as soon as you have one. We can flag seam and overhang issues while they are still cheap to solve.

The remodels that run smoothly are the ones where the countertop decision was made in month one and executed in month three.
